Very close to Newport is Cwmbran, which features a hotel called the Parkway, which strongly reminds me of the brick crematoria of Aushwitz when arriving.

NB This is a cultural highlight of the place.

Newport has got its fair share of decent old pubs. Can recommend The Carpenters, not sure what their policy on away fans would be though but if you're there early and not in a big group should be ok and a decent pub near the station.
